Freelance rate calculator

Your freelance rate is your target income plus overheads, divided by the hours you can actually bill — not the hours you work. This calculator does that in your browser, free, with no sign-up.

Your targets

Base this on the hours you can actually bill, not the hours you work.

Figures are shown in your currency. Switching relabels them — it does not convert.

$

What you want to earn, after overheads.

$

Software, equipment, insurance, workspace.

hrs

Not 40 — admin, sales and holidays are not billable.

wks

52 minus holiday and time off.

hrs

Used to turn your hourly rate into a day rate and a fixed-fee guide.

hrs

So you can see what a fixed fee for that project should be.

Formula

Rate = (Target income + Overheads) ÷ (Billable hours/week × Working weeks)

How it works

The number people get wrong is billable hours. Using 40 assumes every working hour is paid, which ignores admin, sales, invoicing and downtime — and produces a rate that never reaches the target.

Example

Target 60,000 with 12,000 overheads, billing 20 hours across 45 weeks = 900 billable hours. 72,000 ÷ 900 = 80 per hour.
