Formula
Profit = Revenue − Cost
Margin % = Profit ÷ Revenue × 100 How it works
Margin is profit as a percentage of the SELLING PRICE. It can never reach 100%, because that would mean the item cost you nothing. Revenue of zero has no margin at all, so the tool says so rather than showing 0%.
Example
Charge 1,000 on a job that cost 600. Profit is 400, and 400 ÷ 1,000 = 40% margin. The same job is a 66.67% markup, which is why the two get confused.
