Margin ↔ markup converter

Margin is measured against the selling price, markup against the cost. A 50% margin is a 100% markup. This converts either way instantly.

Formula

Markup = Margin ÷ (1 − Margin) Margin = Markup ÷ (1 + Markup)

How it works

Margin is measured against the selling price and can never reach 100%. Markup is measured against cost and has no upper limit. That asymmetry is exactly why the two are confused.

Example

A 50% margin is a 100% markup. A 20% margin is a 25% markup. An 80% margin is a 400% markup.
