Formula

Profit = Revenue − (all costs) Margin % = Profit ÷ Revenue × 100

How it works

Profitability is only honest if every cost is counted, including your own time. Leaving labour out is the most common reason a job looks profitable and is not.

Example

10,000 revenue against 3,000 labour, 1,500 subcontractors and 500 other = 5,000 profit at a 50% margin.
